For Primary College students there is a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy to prepare them to take advantage of the great opportunities that lie ahead. One of the foundational aims of Austin Cove Baptist College is an emphasis on a high standard of education in a safe, caring and positive environment.  Opportunities are provided for the students to learn cooperatively, to develop respect for others and to become independent learners.

Teaching at the College takes place within a supportive, safe learning environment where the teachers are committed to delivering a challenging curriculum.  Various approaches are incorporated to engage and motivate students to achieve personal success.  In Primary School we focus on a wide range of subject matter and opportunities to ensure each student can develop a breadth of knowledge and skills.

The curriculum is relevant and aimed at the development of student awareness of local, national and international issues.  As a school, we aim at developing and stimulating student enquiry in an attempt to develop life-long learning skills.  We actively build upon and extend work that has already been foundational to students in their earlier educational years and therefore our curriculum demonstrates progression and continuity.

This year we have specialist teachers in Digital Technology (ICT), Music, French, Physical Education, Library Skills, Christian Education and Art.

Computer Information and Communication Technologies are also used across the curriculum at all year levels.

Our Kindergarten Programme

In Kindergarten we are engaged in using the Early Years Learning Framework.  This is a national framework to ensure quality educational programmes. The five key goals are building a strong identity, making connections with their world, strong sense of wellbeing, confidence in learning and effective communication.

We work through play, building relationships with specialists, home and school, monitor progress and grow and develop together.  Our emphasis is on social skill building and confidence to begin the literacy and numeracy journey with a strong foundation to progress successfully.

Our Junior Years Programme (Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2)

In Junior Primary, we build on the foundations established by the Kindergarten.  The emphasis is placed on students starting to use their own writing and reading to develop literacy.  The staff is committed to supporting students on their own learning journey.

In the junior years, students start to become aware of things beyond their own experiences and take an interest in the community, developing friendships and caring for those around them.  Our programme focuses on Literacy and Numeracy while integrating Science, History, Geography, Health and Art and Technology.  Specialist teachers teach Library, Sport and Health.

Our Middle Years Programme (Year 3 and Year 4)

In Middle Primary, students move to a more independent level of language that allows for the development of research skills and the exploration of literacy of a higher content level.  Students are given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of specific topics and explore their interests.

Digital Technology is integrated in their learning journey and the core subjects are explicitly taught.  Specialist teachers teach Library, Sport, Music, Applied Christian Education, LOTE, Digital Technology and Art.

Our Upper Years Programme (Year 5 and Year 6)

Work in the Upper Primary is aimed at independence and leadership.

High expectations are placed on the correct use of language in different settings.  The study of English helps to create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens.  Through English, individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them.  Students in Upper Primary begin to understand and appreciate different points of view.  Through participation in modelled and independent writing sessions, students are explicitly taught the structures and conventions of text types such as narrative, information reports, exposition, poetry, procedure and recount.

Mathematical skills are developed to enable students to cope with more difficult concepts and develop their abstract thoughts and processes needed for Secondary Mathematics.  Mathematics develops the student’s numeracy capabilities that they will need in their personal, work and civic life and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built.

Leadership skills and specific responsibilities help build the character of students in their age group.  The focus is to support students in Upper Primary to develop into discerning young people.  They learn to cope with the pressures of peers’ and others’ expectations in a supported community.  Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

Learning Support Program

Through our Learning Support Program, Austin Cove Baptist College models and provides an inclusive education program for students. The philosophy of inclusive education encourages educators to create new ways to challenge students requiring extension and support. The Learning Development Team under the coordination of the Deputy of Curriculum, Janine Venter, oversees the operation of student programs.  Issues or concerns can be taken either to the class teacher or the Deputy of Curriculum.

Home Learning

At Austin Cove Baptist College, we believe that home learning is a valuable aspect of the learning process and it contributes to the development of sound study habits. Learning is enhanced through the provision of opportunities to review, reinforce and apply what has been learned at school.  Home learning also enables parents to become aware of what students are studying at school and monitor student ability in various areas of study.

The following guidelines apply:

Kindergarten:  No formal homework

Pre-Primary:  10 minutes, four times a week

Year 1:  up to 20 minutes, four times a week

Year 2:  up to 20 minutes, four times a week

Year 3:  up to 30 minutes, four times a week

Year 4:  up to 30 minutes, four times a week

Year 5:  up to 45 minutes, four times a week

Year 6:  up to 45 minutes, four times a week
