Senior School students are able to choose from VET courses that are completed within the College, either face to face or online. These VET courses give students qualifications that are recognised both through TAFE and in industry and can lead both to employment or further studies at TAFE.

Students can also study at South Metro or North Metro TAFE one day per week during Years 11 and 12.

Secondary School is an exciting step for students. There are new challenges and new rewards. Students undergo personal growth as they develop intellectually and are exposed to areas of academic, sporting and personal achievement. Students will begin to make decisions and choices regarding their own education and the direction that they wish to undertake in the future.

The curriculum will focus on the eight learning areas, Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education, The Arts and Technologies.

Academic Structure

The Deputy Principal - Curriculum and Heads of Department coordinate the curriculum content and assessment processes across the College, within the School Curriculum and Standards Authority framework. Students at Austin Cove Baptist may enter University, TAFE or direct employment at the completion of Year 12, so the curriculum is designed to extend and enrich students' learning throughout Years 7 to 10.

Year 7

Year 7 is the first year of Secondary School and as such provides an introduction to the routine and rigour of the senior school. There is a balance between the MESH Subjects (Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences) as well as Health and Physical Education (HPE), The Arts, and Technologies. Students also study Applied Christian Education (ACE) and Chinese. Support is given by the Head of Year to every student so that they feel at ease developing new personal organisation and time management skills as well as new study habits.

Term One starts with the Year 7 camp at the beginning of the term. This provides a relaxed and fun-filled opportunity for all students to get to know one another. There are also other opportunities during the year for social events provided just for Year 7 students.

Years 8, 9 and 10

Students continue to study a set curriculum of MESH, HPE, elective and ACE subjects. There is a variety of subjects that students can choose from.

The Year 9’s will attend a camp, while the Year 10, students will leave campus for a week and complete Work Experience outside of the College. All year groups have regular socials that they attend.

Years 11 and 12

The College has put together a wide choice of courses for Year 11 and 12. The courses allow students to choose from a University (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank - ATAR) pathway or a TAFE/apprenticeships/direct employment (General) pathway. Students are also able to choose from a range of Vocational Education and Training courses and gain Certificate II and III’s during school hours.

Detailed information on the courses we offer is provided in our subject selection forms and subject information booklets.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in Workplace Learning, a selective program that allows students to participate in workplace training either during or outside of school hours. The Year 11’s and 12’s both have a camp that they attend each year.
